Timeline of Disease

Acute Retroviral Syndrome
  • Time Period: 2-4 weeks after infection
  • Flu-like symptoms ~ From increase in HIV cells & decrease of antibodies
    • Fever (Most Common)
    • Headache (Most Common)
    • Sore throat/ cough
    • Swollen Lymph nodes
    • Sweating
    • Confusion
    • Fatigue
    • Vomiting/ Diarrhea
    • Muscle Aches
    • Skin Rash
Aysmptomicaitic Stage
  • Time Period: Up to 10-12 years after infection
  • Symptomless from opportunistic infections (OI) or other frequent illness
  • Clinically latent yet Biologically active
    • HIV is replicating however the Immune system is replenishing antibodies
    Window of Infectivity ~ 3-6 months period after someone is infected with HIV, but test will show them being HIV -
    Seroconversion ~ When an infected person goes from testing HIV- to HIV +, after the window of infectivity
Chronic Symptomatic HIV/ AIDS Related Complex
  • Symptomatic frequent illnesses, but not opportunistic infections
  • HIV continues increase, while antibodies began to decline
AIDS
  • When an infected person's Helper T4 Cells per milliliter of blood is less then 200
  • OR
  • gets 1 or more opportunistic infections
